First recognised as an official settlement in 1250 by the Knights Templars. It’s centrepiece is the 68 meter high tower of the church of Saint John the Baptist. The tower took some 19 years to build and was completed in 1803.

In the hills of the Sierra de Irta national park is the 12th century Castle of Alcalá de Xivert built by the Moors and once held by the Knights Templers and the Christians.
